Chill Pops

After launching the collaboration of Koalaty Time with my sister, I wanted to do more of these amigurumi with card pairing lines. My next endeavor was for a friendship card that would come with two matching amigurumi as the charms. I decided to crochet little popsicle ornaments, but then the only task was to create the cute corny lines that come with it. I immediately thought of, "I'll melt with you," because it shows dedication and sacrifice, but it also contributes to the fact that popsicles melt which is a tiny bit depressing. I think if I decide to make grilled cheese sandwich amigurumi, this would be perfect. Instead I came up with,"Let's chill together" and decided to name my popsicles, "Chill Pops."

Unfortunately, the card is still being worked on, but the popsicles are out and looking pretty chill!

A Cure to Dessert Deprivation

The past few months I have been craving for a dessert that I actually never had the pleasure of indulging in: a Banana Split. I'm not sure how I have gone almost a quarter century and not had this treat, but I have. After expressing this to a friend one day,

I decided to take his suggestion, and crochet my own. I don't really know all the ingredients or positions of this dessert, but I knew the two major components were banana and ice cream scoop. The banana was fun and simple enough, but the ice cream was a bit more challenging. I tried to mimic the scoop effect of perfect round bulge with excess bottom parts. What I was left with was something that looked like ice cream but also a plump little jellyfish. So I decided to make a little whipped cream and cherry head much like I had done for my pie, to counter the potential confusion. I also had to create a pretty bowl with complimenting colors for the pair to snuggle in.

Now I have my own immortal Banana Split to keep me company as I patiently wait to savor my very first real one. These guys make my eyes and heart enough happy to make my stomach content.

It's April Time

Recently I was commissioned to crochet April O'Neil from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles holding a camera. It was very difficult, and slightly traumatizing to find decent authentic pictures of April due to all the porn of her out there. I never thought about her being an iconic sex symbol, but after seeing all of that, I guess it makes sense.

After re-familiarizing myself with her, I realized her hair would be the most difficult part for me. I knew I could get the front part correct, due to practice with my Link amigurumi, but the only time I covered the whole backside of a head with hair was for Rusty's mullet, and even then, it was OK to look crazy because... it's a mullet. Many loops later, I was able to construct a full head of hair. After getting her proportions set in accordance to the other turtles, I had to figure out how I wanted to design her outfit. I like to keep my amigurumi simplified, so after I tested felt and yarns to accentuate pockets, in the end, I decided to show some V-neck flesh then detail it with a yarn collar for the finishing touch.

In addition to creating a new pattern, I was so stressed about running out of yarn and not being able to find the same color after digging through my home bin, and going to three different stores. My poor turtles remained armless for a while and I almost had to take them apart to redo because I also ran out of the body color for them as well! I wish dye lots always matched up so that the color stated on the label, is the color I'm always going to get. But that's enough yarn chronicles for now, because I am so glad that this set came together and is finally complete!
